Artur Szewczyk

The passionate singer, dancer, dance teacher and choreographer was born in Poland and has been rooted in Roma culture since he was a child. He began his artistic career in the world of Roma green art at the age of 12 and has remained loyal to this genre with great success to this day. He married into a Russian Roma family and moved with her to Grevenbroich in Germany in 1986, where he still lives today. He learned to dance and sing mainly through the Roma, with whom he grew up in his hometown of Lublin. Later important teachers joined him, who awakened a love of stage work in him – like the famous Roma artist Michaj Wasyl Burano.
Artur first appeared as a soloist in a Roma show at the age of 14. Meanwhile, many appearances on TV and on stage are part of his life. He worked in the famous gypsy ensemble ROMA and as a longtime soloist in the Polish Roma music theater TERNO, with whom he had guest performances in Sweden, Norway, Finland, the USA and Germany.
Artur Szewczyk is the founder and member of leading groups on the Eastern European Roma music scene and has devoted his entire life to this work in addition to performing himself.
Artur is also the archivist of the history of the Polish and Russian Roma and has a huge collection of cinematic and photographic documents on the development of the Roma stage arts. He also speaks three different Roma dialects and above all preserves the knowledge of the old words and idioms that he is happy to pass on to you young Roma.
For the last 10 years Artur has been teaching Romani (Gypsy) dance in Berlin, Germany at Katusha’s Kozubek Romany Dance School.
